Bulford based 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment lifted the prestigious Army FA Major Units Challenge Cup at the Aldershot Military Stadium in early May with a 3-0 success versus The Royal Tank Regiment.

A deserved victory on the evening saw Mercians take the lead just before the interval through 19-year-old Pte Samuel Barber after neat footwork. Despite chances to extend the lead it wasn’t until nine minutes from time when Watitemwa Mkandawire extended the lead. The same player confirmed a brace in the final minute to ensure victory for 1 Mercian who were defeated finalists just two years ago.

The match also saw a significant occasion for the longest serving sponsors in Army Football history with Towergate Insurance sponsoring the competition for the 40th year. Thank you to Pam Howson and the team for such wonderful, continued support.
