Minor Units Cup Final

Armour Centre Win Minor Units Cup

ATR Winchester returned to the Aldershot Military Stadium three weeks after being defeated 2-1 in the UK South Minor Units Cup by 47 Regiment RA. They started the stronger of the two teams in this contest but went behind on 11 minutes against the run of play when Cpl Ashley Doyle netted with a superb strike. In the ascendency Bovington based Armour Centre nearly added a second a minute later when Cpl Josh Hewson found space inside the right hand side of the penalty box and from a narrow angle saw his shot cannon of the post. Hewson was proving a nuisance connecting to provide an acrobatic power strike from 25 yards which edged just past the post. On 24 minutes Doyle added a second with a low shot that cannoned into the ground before passing Paul Williamson in the ATR goal.

A first half of few chances saw ATR Bdr Corey Budd slice an effort just wide of the near post whilst CoH Jim Wincott headed over the bar from a corner for the Armour Centre.

Doyle was denied his hat-trick after the break after an excellent save from Williamson. The  follow up from Cpl Dan Bickley was bravely blocked. However it was Doyle who did eventually seal the match and his hat-trick when he netted with low strike on the right with just eight minutes remaining.

The post match party saw Brigadier Sharon Nesmith (Army FA Vice President) present to the match officials. The Man of the Match Award was presented to Cpl Ashley Doyle by Pam Howson, from sponsors Towergate Insurance. The runners up medals and trophy was presented by Col (Retd) Tony Workman whilst Brigadier Nesmith handed the Minor Units Trophy for 2018 for the first time to captain Cpl Dan Joines from The Armour Centre.
