RLC Win Woolwich Cup

RLC Win the Woolwich Cup for the first time since 2016.

RLC won the Army Men’s Corps Woolwich Cup for the first time since 2016 with a 4-1 victory v Royal Signals in the final at the home of English Football League Sutton United; a match covered live via the BFBS You Tube channel.

A comprehensive clinical first half gave the RLC the edge. LCpl Luke Noble netted a penalty on the quarter hour before captain Cpl Sean Woolley produced a fierce strike to extend the lead four minutes later as he shuffled in from the left, beat two players and unleashed a powerful drive from 20 yards. RLC added a third before the half hour mark when Pte Owen James netted.

Despite extensive pressure after the break Signals were unable to claw their way back into the match and James sealed matters on 76 minutes with his second goal of the game and also the Player of the Match Award. A late Signals goal proved to be a consolation.

The post-match presentations were led by Men’s Corps sponsor Holts Military Banking and their representative Julian McElhinney.

The match officials were SSgt Chris Steadman (Referee), Cpl Ash Foster, Major Andrew Desroches (Assistants), Fourth: Sgt Simon Thorburn.
