Army v Navy Men 18

Triple Joy For Army

It was a successful opening for the Army in the 2018 Inter Services in Aldershot on Wednesday.

A bizarre match hosted at National League Aldershot Town Football Club saw the Army men come from behind twice before recording a 7-3 versus the Royal Navy. Substitute LCpl Adam Wakley (Infantry) netted a brace alongside Cpl Callum Wilkinson whilst Spr Sam Atkinson (RE), Spr Dan Stoneman (RE) and LCpl Luke Noble (R Signals) were also on the score-sheet. The victory ensured that the Army won the annual Mercury Cup and retained the Southern Counties Cup. Presentations were made after the match by Dave Richbell and Len Cordell, representing the Southern Counties whilst Aldershot Town Chairman Shahid Azeem presented the Mercury Cup.

Earlier in the day Army Women also came from behind to defeat the Royal Navy 2-1 at Aldershot Military Stadium. Two goals in the early exchanges of the second half turned the match for the Army. The opening goal was scored by Shannon Weston (RE) on 54 minutes before Kelly Aldridge (REME) scored from the penalty spot three minutes later. Victory confirmed the annual Knight Trophy which was presented by Mark Austin from sponsors Trinity Insurance. Army FA Vice President Brigadier Sharon Nesmith presented the Player of the Match Award to Kelly Aldridge.

Both teams travel to Shrewsbury Town FC next Wednesday (14th March) to continue the Inter Services Tournament versus the RAF who are commemorating their 100th anniversary. The Women kick off at 1400hrs and Men at 1900hrs. Victory for the Army in either discipline will secure the Inter Services. Any other results will see the competition extend to the final match.

The Army Vets Team also enjoyed a successful opener to a busy day securing a 4-0 victory versus the Royal Navy on the Aldershot Queens Avenue 3G courtesy of goals from Sgt Chris Geary (RLC), WO1 Ellis Langford (RLC), WO2 Paul Douglass (RLC) and SSgt Gary Adamson (RLC).
