UK North Womens Cup Semi Final

The first semi-final of the UK North Women’s Cup was held yesterday in Catterick. This game saw the top two teams in the league meet each other in...

After lots of last minute running around to ensure both teams had sufficient numbers 5 RA and DMG(N) kicked off at 1345hrs on a cold wet afternoon. Unfortunately due to a clash of colours DMG(N) were made to wear the newly purchased league shirts, however they seemed extremely confident as they took to the field of play.

From the off it was obvious that this would be a close game.  DMG(N) had an abundance of flair and were using the ball extremely well, that said this didn’t seem to faze 5 RA who seemed content to soak up all that DMG could offer and hit on the counter. Mid-way through the first half DMG(N) scored when the ball dropped kindly to their AMS Corps striker who calmly slotted the ball away. Unfazed 5 RA upped the work rate and started to press. With five minutes to go before half time 5 RA were level after a sublime strike that was worthy of any premiership game.

The second half was much of the same with neither team letting up.  Both teams were now creating chances but their keepers were both having a blinder, producing some outstanding saves.  With the game heading to whistle and extra time awaiting the whistle blew for hand ball in the box. DMG(N) had been awarded a penalty and in front of their entire unit (yes, we even had a sizable crowd) this went ahead, 2-1. This goal seemed to give the Gunners an extra spark and instead of sulking they went for it showing amazing dedication and pride. Alas after creating numerous chances the game was over and DMG(N) had made it into the final.

Both teams should be congratulated for they’re  efforts, the outstanding skills displayed and the manner in which they played the game as it was worthy of any final and a game I will remember for a long time. The official should also be congratulated as he was brilliant, especially as it was his first official game after qualifying. Not sure if he expected to be officiating his first game in front of a sizable crowd but he did himself proud.
