Hitchin Town Football Club is hosting a special “Forces Day” on Saturday January 28, the day the Canaries play host to Chesham United at Top Field (kick off 3pm).
The club will grant free admission to all servicemen (including the Territorial Army) - and their families - in uniform or with appropriate identity. A charity collection will be held, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
The day will be special for young Thomas Dean, whose father, Sgt. Andy Dean, is a member of D Squadron 254 Medical Regiment, currently serving in Afghanistan. Thomas will be the match mascot.
Sgt. Dean’s family will be in attendance, along with the family of another Hitchin soldier present on operational duty in Afghanistan, Sgt. Derrick Sims, who is also a member of D Squadron.
Hitchin Town Chairman, Terry Barratt, commented: “Last season, one of our most successful initiatives was Forces Day and we have been keen to hold the event again.
"We have good links with local servicemen and we welcome all representatives of the Army, Navy, RAF and TA to Top Field. We are especially pleased to be paying tribute to the people who are on active duty today.”
Forces Day has been well supported locally, notably by the local TA, members of D Squadron, 254 Medical Regiment, based in Bedford Road.
